About the Pub

The Old Court House, is a traditional thatched country Inn, family owned and managed.

The building is steeped in history, the front part of the ‘T’ shaped building dates from 1633 or earlier and was at that time if not previously a local Court.

The original Charles 1 ‘Coat of Arms’, original and sympathetically restored remains. At around seven feet square this plaque can properly be described as ‘spectacular’, the Coat of Arms is now to be found in its original location, currently one of our Bed and Breakfast Room’s.

The Inn, was visited by King Charles 1, in 1634 whilst on his first tour of the West Country in a wheeled carriage.

The Rear section of the building is much older, with parts dating from around 900 AD. Some original walls from that time are still to be seen.

Chulmleigh epitomizes a historic Saxon hill top settlement, as a thriving Town provides it provides numerous amenities including a very pretty Par 3 Golf Course, Horse Riding at Bold Try Stables, Fishing, a variety of spectacular walks (including ‘The Tarka Trail’ and ‘Two Moors Way’) and historic architecture.

We are centrally located for the Exmoor and Dartmoor National Parks
